Russia Attacked a Residential Building in Izium, Ukraine
While in Ukraine last month, Lena Denman visited the apartment building at 2 Pershotravneva Street in Izium. This residential building was hit by a direct attack on March 9, 2022. 44 civilians lost their lives in the attack.
Situated near the Ukrainian border, Izium was on the frontlines of the Russian invasion in 2022. In the days leading up to the attack on 2 Pershotravneva Street, Ukrainian troops were seen defending the area.
“We found no evidence to justify treating the apartment building as a legitimate military target, or that Russian forces tried to avoid or minimize the destruction of so many civilian lives.” - Richard Weir, senior crisis and conflict researcher at Human Rights Watch
Pastor Oleksandr Bagriy of the House of Prayer "New Life" Church in Izium told Lena that some of their parishioners were sheltering in the building at the time of the attack. Thankfully, the church members were able to escape the building alive.
Today, the apartment serves as a reminder of the oppression and destruction that Russia wants to bring upon Ukraine. The community in Izium has seen the horrors of war up close, and ACHF is coming alongside them to help rebuild a vital part of their city.
